Finally an Update!

OUR RUMMAGE SALE WAS A SUCCESS!

I am happy to report that our rummage sale raised $1112 plus an additional donation of $500 came from Chris' grandparents, and with the max matching grant from Walmart, the total for the weekend was $2612! That puts our total at approximately $10,800 and only $2200 to go! I am going to submit an application to our local hospital foundation for the remaining amount which makes awards in September, if that goes through--we'll be done!

The rummage sale went fantastically well. We had so much help, and more volunteers than we ever expected right there with us the entire time! We filled the gym with donations, so many that afterwards we took 3 truck loads of left overs to Goodwill! We made almost 200 sales, and we still need to cash in all of the can donations (that might take a while).

The bad news is that all that time on my feet caused a stress fracture through an old fracture in my foot. Too many workouts in bad shoes leading up to it I guess. I spent Sunday morning in the ER, and I'm doing fine now. We've had lots of help, and I'm glad I made it throught the sale!

We are so excited to be nearing the end of this part of our journey, once we're done raising money for 4 Paws, we'll find out what training class we'll be in, and start raising money for our travel/training expenses.

THANK YOU to all of those who volunteered to help with this event, the set up, the location, the organizing, sales, take down, all of it couldn't have been done in such a small amount of time without all of your help. A big thanks to Shane Pratt, principal of West Park Elementary for allowing us access to the facility! And thank you to all of those who came, spent a little money or donated their items, it has made a huge difference for us, and we truly appreciate it!

CNN Heroes!

CNN Heroes is doing a story on 4 Paws and its founder Karen Shirk! The story will air during Larry King Live on thursday July 17th, and will repeat from 11am -12 pm on Friday, 11am-12pm and 5pm-6pm on Saturday (I don't know what time zone! I don't have cable, so I'll be looking for it online). It will also be on the web site with a written article, slide show, and additional footage. ( In addition, there will also be an article on CNN.com and will include links to the story, two additional ‘web extra’ pieces and a link to the 4 Paws website. All of this information will also be up until the end of the year on the HEROES website at www.cnn.com/ heroes.)

I'm going to try to get someone to record it for me, but if I can't I'm sure it will be just as good online!

I'm in the process of advertizing for our Rummage Sale coming up. I'm hoping for a good turnout! We'll see how it goes.

Our total is officially $8,175--all of the previously pending donations have posted and I don't know if there are any more pending at this time.

Only $4,825 to go!

Upcoming Event!

We will be having a rummage sale, can drive, and possibly a raffle/auction on July 19th. It will be held at West Park Elementary in Hermiston from 9am to 1pm. We will be there starting at 7am to take donations in addition to any that are made beforehand. More details to come.

No total yet for the last couple of weeks, we're just waiting to get numbers. I'll post as soon as I hear about it!

HOW WE CAME TO BE HERE

In June 2007 we were given the news from the local school system that they had determined that Dallon was "severely" autistic. It was a hard thing to accept or understand. Dallon is not at all what I would have imagined a "severely" autistic child would be. We were also told that he did not qualify for summer services--so I immediately began seeking out alternative resources. By August we had a medical diagnosis from Oregon Health Science University in Portland, OR at their Childhood Development Rehabilitation Center (CDRC).

Dallon has a variety of symptoms, as well as some great skills. He does not consistently respond to his name or engage when someone tries to initiate and interaction with him. He gets overstimulated with sounds and when it is accompanied by bright lights...but this is not a consistent reaction which causes us a lot of difficulty in deciding what he can and cannot handle. He loves to explore and climb and has already had a broken arm as a result of a fall (both forearm bones). He loves to explore new places, and especially places where he can climb or get wet. He did not say more than perhaps 10 words (most of which had very little practical use) until well after his third birthday. By the time he was diagnosed/labeled in June 2007 he was 3 1/2 and had been evaluated several times. Other than his speech, his symptoms seemed 'not so bad' until you look at the wide variety and the number of ways his life is affected by autism. His cognitive and reasoning lagged behind his peers, although he was speaking in short phrases and sentences (at 4 years and 3 months), he still could not tell me where he was hurt when cried. When he is emotional in any way he seems to lose all ability to communicate and reason. He has a very strange eating pattern. He can go for days only eating a few crackers and having a cup of milk at each meal/snack. If I leave food out for him, he will leave it untouched all day--he doesn't seem to consistently recognize when he is hungry.

Dallon will attend Early Intervention preschool services for the 2008-09 school year. He will start on September 8th. He will continue to see his speech therapist for at least the next year. I have reasearched a number of programs offered through various northwest universities, but none of them were affordable or really offered the kinds of interventions I was looking for. His school is trying to start a program for Dallon within the classroom called STAR--it is an Applied Behavior Analysis program that I am very excited about. The ESD attempted to start the program last year, but only got as far as the evaluations to begin. Hopefully they'll be able to do it this year.
I have been considering getting a dog for Dallon for a long time. He loves dogs! And he seems to connect with them. Dogs that typically don't like children seem to like him. A dog would give him so much companionship on a level that doesn't require all of the hard work of a human social relationship.

I ran across an article about Austism service dogs, and began researching them. I found 4 Paws, and immediately felt very good about their program. Their history is amazing and heart warming. They accept everyone! If you have a disability, they can get you a dog. They wouldn't turn us away because Dallon is so young, or because he isn't as "severe" as another child. And what the dog would do to help me will be a huge relief. I won't have to try to fit him in the basket at the grocery store so he won't get lost or wander out the exit. I won't have to worry about how to find him if he was ever separated from us in a public place. He would have someone who could distract him when he is too emotional to function, or calm him when he is overstimulated by his environment. and he would have a friend who will love him unconditionally, no matter how "weird" his social behaviors are.

Please help us if you can, and if you could continue to give to 4 Paws even after we have reached our goal, there are so many other families that benefit from their program. I plan to continue to give for the rest of my life to this program.
